Warm spiced apples with buttery cinnamon oat topping

# What You'll Need:

→ Apple Filling

01 - 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples, Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
02 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
03 - 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
04 - 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
05 - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
06 - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
07 - 1 tablespoon lemon juice
08 - Pinch of salt

→ Crisp Topping

09 - 1 cup old-fashioned oats
10 - 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
11 - 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
12 - 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
13 - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
14 - 1/4 teaspoon salt

# How To Make It:

01 - In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt. Toss until apples are thoroughly coated with the sugar mixture.
02 - Transfer the apple mixture to the bottom of a lightly greased 4-quart or larger crockpot, spreading into an even layer.
03 - In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold cubed butter and rub into the dry ingredients using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
04 - Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples. Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 to 2.5 hours, or on LOW for 3.5 to 4 hours, until apples are tender and topping is golden.
05 - For a crisper topping, remove the lid during the final 30 minutes of cooking time.
06 - Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

# Tips from dashanddishes:

01 -
  • The house smells incredible hours before anyone takes a bite
  • You can throw everything together and walk away until dessert time
  • That tender fruit with crispy topping combination is impossible to resist
02 -
  • Every slow cooker heats differently so start checking at 2 hours to avoid overcooking
  • Leaving the lid off for the last 30 minutes is absolutely worth it for that crispy topping
  • The resting time after cooking helps the fruit juices thicken up nicely
03 -
  • Mix different apple varieties for the most complex flavor
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts added to the topping make it extra special
