Smash Burger Tacos (Printable)

Juicy smashed beef on toasted tortillas with melted cheddar and classic burger fixings for a quick, playful mashup.

# What You'll Need:

→ Burger Patties

01 - 1 pound ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 blend)
02 - 1 teaspoon kosher salt
03 - 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

→ Tacos

04 - 8 small flour tortillas
05 - 4 slices cheddar cheese, halved
06 - 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for toasting)

→ Toppings

07 - 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
08 - 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
09 - 1 large tomato, sliced
10 - 1/2 cup sliced pickles
11 - 1/4 cup burger sauce or mayonnaise
12 - Ketchup, to taste
13 - Mustard, to taste

# How To Make It:

01 - Set a large cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until hot.
02 - Divide the ground beef into 8 equal balls, each about 2 ounces.
03 - Lay out each tortilla on the work surface and place one beef ball in the center. Press to flatten the beef so it covers most of the tortilla using your hand or a spatula.
04 - Once the skillet is hot, position a tortilla-meat assembly onto the skillet with the meat side facing down. Firmly press down with a flat spatula to flatten the patty and ensure it adheres to the tortilla. Season the exposed beef with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
05 - Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, allowing the beef to develop a deep crust and crispy edges.
06 - Flip the assembly so the tortilla is now on the skillet. Top the beef side with half a slice of cheddar cheese. Continue cooking for 1 minute to melt the cheese and toast the tortilla.
07 - Remove the finished taco from the skillet and continue with remaining assemblies until all are cooked.
08 - Layer each taco with shredded lettuce, sliced onion, tomato, pickles, and drizzle with burger sauce, ketchup, or mustard as preferred. Fold and serve while hot.

# Tips from dashanddishes:

01 -
  • The crispy, caramelized burger crust hugging a warm tortilla feels like a guilty secret you’ll want to share.
  • Each taco sets the stage for toppings, sauces, and cheese to collide in every bite—never a dull moment.
02 -
  • Trying to overstuff the tacos makes them collapse in your hand—less really is more here.
  • Brushing tortillas with butter before the skillet sets up unbeatable flavor and crunch.
03 -
  • Chilling the beef balls before smashing prevents sticking and helps them sear instantly.
  • A touch of freshly cracked black pepper right before cooking wakes up the flavor like nothing else.
